One of the great features of the internet is having access to web cams that overlook home. I've managed to track down three cameras that show different areas of home. One is atop the CBC building in downtown Fort William. It gives a nice view of the Sleeping Giant and harbour.
The second one I found shows the marina. It has about four different views that the image flips between.
The last one is somewhere up in Hillcrest park. Out of the three the CBC building is the clearest image the others are a bit blurry and not always reliable.
So when I get into work at 7:30 I can turn on the CBC cam and watch the sunrise back at home. That is something I've never even done when I lived there. It's pretty cool. It is one thing you realize you miss being in the big city - the sunrises aren't nearly as breathtaking as they are at home.
I do miss home. I'll be glad to be visiting in a bit more than a month. It never seems long enough when I'm there. Maybe this time it will be; although I doubt it.
I've realized that there are many costs to living here. The first is that you have to accept that your idea of a home is a single family detached house. Most young couples buying their first home can't afford one never mind a person like me with a single income. You pretty much have to accept the fact that you'll be living in an apartment or condo the size of a postage stamp.
This week and last there were people lined up to purchase condos here near my office. It was the most annoying thing! They hogged the sidewalk for a week before the damn units even went on sale. The bloody developers were just rubbing their hands with glee at how much publicity they were getting.
Realtors paid students to sit outside on the sidewalk for a week before just to guarantee themselves a place in line. Of course the developers wouldn't think of issuing a ticket that guaranteed that person a place in line just to keep the people from hanging about on the sidewalk! Hell no! They'd lose all that publicity and the jusitification for changing the starting price from $300 000 to $500 000!
Personally I think all those people in line are stupid! Well save the students cause they are just there to get money for school. Anyone who would want to live in this urban wasteland is insane. You just end up paying way too much money for a piece of property the size of a shoebox. When they say location, location, location they ain't kidding. The penthouse in this place alone is worth 24 million dollars.
24 million dollars! Isn't that insane! Those people have more money than brainS! Spending that kind of money on a damn condo! Go buy a mansion on a few acres of land instead!
As shelter is a basic human need I think it should be illegal to profit from real estate. Shelter is something that everyone should have access to at a reasonable cost. Developers shouldn't be allowed to inflate the prices like they do. If that's naive I just don't care.
I would never spend that much money on something so small. You're getting nothing for your money. Instead I'll save my money and wait. If it means I never end up owning a piece of anything in this city than so be it. I'll just put it aside and wait till I retire and then buy myself a nice house back home. $300 000 dollars there will at least get me something real for my money.
